Bowling Green FC Falls to FC Leopards in Home Opener, 3-1

BGFC's Brantley Estes "25" run towards FCL goal line in an attempt to score an early goal
BOWLING GREEN, KY – Bowling Green FC suffered a tough 3-1 defeat to local rivals FC Leopards in their 2025 UPSL home opener at The Pit on Saturday night. Despite a strong start and a second-half equalizer, BGFC couldn't hold off the late surge from the Leopards, who sealed the match with two goals in the final ten minutes.
The match began with high intensity as BGFC looked to control the pace, but it was the visitors who struck first in the 24th minute. FC Leopards’ Lewis found the back of the net in a controversial goal that left BGFC players and fans frustrated. Despite the setback, the Lions continued to press, creating multiple chances but failing to convert before halftime.
Coming out of the break, BGFC showed resilience and found their equalizer in the 58th minute. Academy product Eli Redpath, wearing the number 15, rose to meet a well-delivered corner kick, heading the ball past the Leopards’ keeper to ignite the home crowd. With momentum on their side, BGFC looked poised to take control of the match.
However, a string of unfortunate events derailed their comeback. Injuries disrupted the Lions’ rhythm, with Alex Pacheco and Brantley Estes both forced off after taking heavy hits that could have warranted stronger disciplinary action. Despite strong performances from midfield maestro John Villatoro and the creativity of Santiago Henrich, BGFC struggled to maintain their energy against a persistent Leopards attack.
The turning point came in the 84th minute when a Leopards free kick struck the post and rebounded off goalkeeper Hayden Wiggins for an own goal, putting BGFC back on the defensive. In stoppage time, Leopards forward Kiza struck again in the 94th minute, closing the match at 3-1 and denying BGFC any chance of a comeback.
After the match, there was clear disappointment among the BGFC squad, having lost on home turf despite a promising display. Without offering official comments, the team acknowledged the need to regroup and refocus for their next challenge.
BGFC now turns their attention to a crucial away fixture against league rivals Tennessee Tempo FC on Saturday, April 5, with a 6 PM kickoff. With the season still in its early stages, the Lions aim to bounce back and correct their mistakes as they push forward in the 2025 UPSL campaign.
